Give for one specific thing

Each price is the sum of its parts, itemised, priced at the shops we actually buy from, plus the fuel it takes to drive it out. Nothing is rounded up and nothing is skimmed off for overhead. We do have fixed costs. They are small, nobody here takes a salary, and they come out of general giving rather than out of this.

Gifts here go to the greatest need within that effort. If we have more rent deposits funded than young people needing one this month, the money waits for the next one rather than being spent on something else.

  $12 materials + $5 covers fuel to drive out to the streets

  A hygiene kit for somebody living outside. Toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, a razor, body wipes, socks, bandages, SPF 30 lip balm, sunscreen, a collapsible water bottle and electrolyte packets, in a drawstring bag they keep. The sunscreen and the water are in there because this is Phoenix and they are the two things most likely to hurt somebody in July.

• Bedding sets

  Everything needed to make one bed in a shelter or a first apartment. A twin or twin XL sheet set with pillowcase, a pillow, a fleece blanket, a bath towel and hygiene products, handed over as a package. Twin XL because shelter and dorm beds usually are, and a standard twin set on a twin XL bed is a wasted gift.

• Identity documents

  $32 per set

  A certified Arizona birth certificate at $20 and a state ID card at $12. This is the package that makes somebody employable, bankable and housable, and almost nothing else can happen until it exists. A replacement Social Security card is free, so it is not in the price. No fuel is added: nobody drives a birth certificate anywhere.

• Road ready documents

  $52 per set

  A birth certificate at $20, an instruction permit at $7 and an Arizona driver licence at $25 for ages 16 to 39. Arizona charges nothing for the written or the road test. A licence is not the same as an ID card, and for a young adult in Phoenix without transport it is often the difference between a job and no job.

• Lunch with a young adult

  $45 per lunch

  $40 the meal + $5 covers fuel to drive out to the streets

  We pick somebody up and take them to lunch. Two real Phoenix menus put a meal for two between $31 and $44 with tax and tip. This one is less about the food than about a couple of hours with an adult who is not being paid to be there, and it is often where we find out what somebody actually needs.

Household Stability | a widowed mother and two children

"Francine" met her husband when they were both going through a hard stretch. They built a life and had two children.

Ten years later "Fred" died. There was no ill intent and no bad situation. He was just gone.

She has medical conditions of her own and cannot work a full schedule. She works the side jobs she can and keeps two children fed and housed. The state programs she qualifies for cover part of it. They do not cover the rent, the power bill in July, or keeping a car running so the school run happens.

That gap is what this fund covers. Each amount below is a contribution toward a bill, not the whole of it. Everything is paid straight to the landlord, the utility and the grocer. Cash would count against the help she already has and would leave her worse off.
